The strength and elastic recovery characteristics of ring-spun and rotor open-end-spun cotton, polyester, polyester/viscose rayon and cotton/polyester are examined at different strain levels. The cotton ring-spun and rotor-spun yarns can be strained up to 2% extension without causing any permanent deformation to their structure, whereas the other yarns can be extended up to 3% Sizing increases the yarn modulus by about 2.6 times up to 2% strain level when compared to grey yarn. To forecast the performance of sized yarns in weaving, their modulus behaviour at 3% extension may be given preference over their ultimate breaking tenacity.
