Research on the prediction of wool spinning performance and yarn quality developed a quality control package that predicts these variables in terms of the best commercial practice. With this package, a textile mill can quickly evaluate the performance of a yarn lot based on count and twist. The package also uses top properties, including fiber diameter, coefficient of variation (CV) of fiber diamter, hauteur, CV of hauteur, strength, and crimp. Fiber diameter is the most important property, although the effect of hauteur can be significant. Results from the measurement of fiber bundle strength quantified the effects of this property. The CV of hauteur had only a small effect, and little evidence exists for an optimal CV of hauteur. The quality control package integrates this knowledge into computer base prediction algorithms. 41 refs.
