Over the pasl 25 years, spun polyester has almost completely replaced natural fibers, particularly mercerized cotton, in sewing thread. The cost and performance of spun polyester sewing thread during sewing and in the seam during wear are evaluated. Its most important sewing properties are high strength and modulus, uniform frictional properties, and resistance to heat and abrasion. Its most important wear properties are optimal strength and extensibility, good resistance to chemical and biological attacks, good color stability, low shrinkage during washing and ironing, optimal frictional properties, and optimal seam appearnce. The very low cost of spun polyester sewing thread has ensured its competitiveness.
