In developing the theory of balloon formation in over-end unwinding of yarn from cylindrical packages, the simplifying assumption that the yarn is inextensible has been used. In this study, the effect of yarn elasticity on an unwinding balloon was examined. Balloon equations for a linear elastic yarn were derived. Numerical solutions to these equations for small values of the elastic parameter were demonstrated. The inclusion of elasticity in the theoretical model was concluded to lead to a decrease in the tension in the balloon and a decrease in balloon radius. However, for the range of elastic parameters encountered in real yarns, the effect was very slight. 10 refs.
