The maximum rate of weft insertion that is possible without casuing adverse effects on weft break frequency was determined. Weft break probability at various insertion speeds was computed using Gaussian distribution laws for both yarn tear strength and loading, as well as Gaussian distribution laws for yarn tear strength and exponential distribution laws for loading. The model allowed calculation of an optimum weft insertion rate and an optimum weaving width. When yarns were uneven, large differences in tension and weft break frequency followed an exponential distribution, which reduced the weft insertion rate and optimum insertion speed. Weft yarn loading should be as low as possible and maximum loading should occur at the start of insertion. Weft ends should have sufficient tensile strength and minimum unevenness. 5 refs.
