A fiber-loop test method was developed to evaluate the thermobonding performance of two different grades of polypropylene fiber and one grade of copolyester fiber with varying water content. A flexible themomechanical analyzer was used in this method. The fibers contained water because they were first immersed in water and then exposed to more water through subsequent conditioning. The presence of water appeared to decrease the bond strength and the optimal thermobonding temperature. The effect of time on bond strength and the function of water in thermobonding were examined. 10 refs.
