Any force that inhibits the rotation of the balloon causes an increase in the height of spinning triangle, which results in greater yarn hairiness. Air resistance to rotation and friction against the retaining ring are important examples of these forces. Both are critical in the development of hairiness during the production of a cop. Tension on the yarn, which can be caused by the weight of the traveler or by the spindle speed, can affect hairiness. These effects can be direct or indirect. An example of a direct effect is when the fibers are stretched under great tension and better binding, which results in less hairiness. An example of an indirect effect is when increased tension reduces friction at the ring and consequently reduces air resistance.
