Air textured yarns are gaining popularity because they resemble conventional spun yarns. The properties of air textured yarns produced from nylon, polyester, viscose, and their blends were examined. A modified Du Pont XIV type air jet was used. All of the yarns, except for the viscose yarns, were heat-set prior to tensting. Yarn properties tested included tenacity, breaking extension, initial modulus, shrinkage, bulk, and linear density. Tenacity and breaking extension were higher for polyester than for nylon or viscose. The initial modulus was highest for polyester. Boiling water shrinkage was higher for viscose than for nylon or polyester. Bulk was significantly higher for viscose than for nylon or polyester. Viscose also showed the greatest changes in linear density. 6 refs.
