The development of open end rotor spinning, open end friction spinning, fiber cover spinning, and filament cover spinning has led to attempts to use the types of staple yarns produced on these systems in the construction of knit fabrics. The properties of yarns used to construct knit fabrics, including yarn count, twist, strength, uniformity, hairiness, curling tendency, elasticity, coefficient of yarn friction, waxing, and pilling tendency, will affect such quality factors as the appearance, hand, dimensional stability, and abrasion characteristics of the fabric. Open end rotor yarns are being used extensively in knit goods. Open end friction and filament covered yarns are being used in the coarse count sector. Fiber covered yarn processed using the PLYlii process is strong enough to be used in knit fabrics. 36 refs.
