Special Yarn for Use in Surgical Swabs

Courtaulds Specialty Fibres developed an X-ray detectable yarn for manufacturing surgical swabs. The new Micropake multifilament polypropylene yarn is wrapped with a fine polyester fiber of 3,800 decitex. During melt extrusion, treatment of polypropylene with barium sulfate results in a yarn that meets X-ray opacity requirements. Micropake yarn is suitable for woven and nonwoven fabric manufacturing, and may be bleached or sterilized by steam treatment. Courtaulds manufactures Micropake yarn in a variety of colors, including standard blue.
