The effect of thermal ageing/heat treatment on the mechanical properties of cotton and linen yarns, is studied. Investigations in the temperature range 100-150℃ show that thermal ageing suddenly accelerates above 120℃, which is reflected in a sharp deterioration in the mechanical properties (tenacity, breaking elongation and work to rupture). The deterioration is less marked in the case of the cotton yarns.
