Researchers studied the properties of 70/30 acrylic/cotton yarns spun on open end rotor and air jet spinning machines. Researchers spun two sets of 29.5 tex yarns at selected speeds and evaluated them for tenacity and breaking extension (using an Instron tensile tester), yarn irregularity (using the Uster evenness test), flat abrasion resistance (using the Taber universal wear test), and flexural rigidity (using the ring loop method). The air jet spun yarns showed a lower tenacity than the rotor spun yarns. The tenacity of the rotor spun yarns decreased slightly with increasing twist factors, but remained constant with increasing rotor speeds. The tenacity of the air jet spun yarns increased with increasing production speeds. Rotor spun yarns showed greater breaking extension, fewer irregularities, greater abrasion resistance, and less rigidity than the air jet spun yarns. 8 refs.
