Flame resistant cotton fabrics are very much in demand. Improving fire resistant properties is straightforward because of the availability of durable flame resistant finishes but often when a cotton fabric is coated it loses up to 50％ of its strength. Dyeneema is a high performance polyethylene fibre (HPPE) and is among the strongest fibres available today which makes it a natural candidate for reinforcing cotton yarns. The US Department of Agriculture developed and patented the ARS core-spinning technology, which is a modified ring-spinning system that produces a yarn with almost total core coverage. Using Dyneema staple fibre in the yarn core, a fabric was produced which exhibited high tear strength in both the greige fabric and the flame resistant finished states.
