The potential for thin-film coatings in the textile industry is discussed. The technology, which is used in the field o machine tool manufacture, permits the deposition of hard-facing layers with a thickness of only a few microns. Following a description o the process, the advantages of thin-film coatings are reivewed and potential fields of applications considered. It is concluded that the technology offers potential advantages for yarn-guiding textile machine components.
