Faults in spun yarns are caused by properties of the raw materials used, inherent errors in the manufacturing process, defective manchinery, mill conditions, and problems due to the push for higher profits. Such fiber properties as degree of crimp, fiber cross sectional shape, fiber maturity, and frictional and elastic properties contribute to fiber irregularities. Inherent properties of drafting machines causes yarn irregularity to increase with yarn fineness. A formula expresses the additive nature of yarn irregularity. Defective carding machines, drawing machines, and ring spinning machines can cause irregular yarns. External causes of yarn irregularity include atmospheric humidity, moisture regain, static electricity, and unscrupulous management policies. 7 refs.
