The rapid growth in membership in the National Association for Plastic Container Recovery (NAPCOR) is an indicator of industry support for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling. A temporary increase in virgin PET in 1996 led to price decreases for recycled PET (RPET). The market recovered in early 1997, and 18 recycling plants existed in the United States by early 1998. The recycling rates for PET, however, are decreasing. NAPCOR's efforts to increase PET recycling include consumer education. NAPCOR designed the PETE's Big Bin to collect single serve PET bottles where they are sold or consumed. Other programs encourage consumers to take PET bottles home for curbside recycling and to purchase items manufactured from RPET.
