An experiment examined the attributes and spinnability of blends of cotton and flax fibers. Researchers obtained flax fibers via chemical, enzymatic, and conventional methods, treating several lots mechanically to shorten the fibers for processing on cotton machinery. Spinning trials produced a series of medium count, apparel grade yarns with an attractive appearance and acceptable hand. A series of tests assessed the physical and aesthetic properties of the fiber blends, yarns, and knit fabrics. Following further refinement, enzymatic retting may be an ecologically attractive and cost effective method of producing flax fibers. Abstract.
