A study investigated fiber transfer as the cause of increased yarn hairiness due to yarn winding, particularly for yarns with less than average diameter. Results indicated that small size yarn imperfections increased after winding. Winding tension level did not affect yarn imperfection levels significantly. Lower winding speeds did not necessarily result in lower yarn imperfection levels after winding. Repeated winding resulted in significant decreases in yarn imperfections during the evenly numbered winding passages. This effect was more pronounced for ring spun yarns than for rotor spun yarns. Generally, the method and direction of yarn testing have a greater influence on reported imperfections than actual increases in thin and thick places and neps resulting from winding. 7 refs.
