Researchers investigated the effect of yarn structure and blend ratio of ring and open end yarns from mixtures of cotton fibers and polyester microfibers on such yarn properties as strength, uniformity, and elongation. They used a microscope to study the longitudinal and cross sections of the yarns and determine the effect of fiber fineness on yarn structure. The values of strength and elongation on 100 percent cotton and polyester yarns were determined and compared with the theoretical and actual values of the blend yarns. The theoretical and actual strength values were similar for 22 tex ring spun yarns having a 67/33 polyester/cotton blend ratio. The theoretical and actual elongation values were similar for open end yarns having a 67/33 polyester/cotton blend ratio.
