A study examined the physical properties of a blend of nylon and X-Static silver coated nylon fibers. The blended fibers had bactericidal properties when directly exposed to bacteria. Bacterial survival decreased rapidly and exponentially in ambient temperatures after a 1 hour delay. The rate of bacteria killing increased with increases in the X-Static percentage in the fiber blend, increased fiber extraction temperature, and higher concentrations of Tris buffer during extraction. Exposing the bacteria to the extract at 37 degrees centigrade eliminated the 1 hour delay period before rapid decrease of survival. Bacteria successfully eradicated upon exposure to the extract included Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus. 12 refs.
