Influence of yarn count and material along with machine condition on splice quality during winding

In this study it was found that the maintenance schedule and practices followed by mills for splicers differ even for the same make of machine, mainly depending on the age of the machine, the material processed and experience. Retained splice strength (RSS) and splice breakage ratio (SBR) values improved after thorough maintenance and weekly cleaning of the splicers was introduced. CV％ of RSS values increased to a greater extent when thorough maintenance was extended from 45 to 60 days. There was no adverse effect of such an extended maintenance schedule on SBR values. The count range should be taken into consideration while deciding the period of the thorough maintenance schedule.
