Teflon fibres are produced by DuPont. They are based on polytetrafluoroethyle and have a wide range of uses. The article presents a brief history of the developoment of Teflon fibres and describes their applications. They are used in filters for high temperature gas, maintenance-free bearings, filters for liquids, protective clothing, sewing threads, electrical flexes, cleaning and lubricating components for photocopiers and laser printers. The properties of Teflon include stability to high temperatures and thermal resistance, a low coefficient of abrasion and low electrical conductivity, reduced stretchability and resistance to UV. A recent application, which will shortly be available in Europe, is blister Guard socks with Teflon fibre.
