this report investigates the failure mechanism of urethane elastomer coated fabric collapsible fuel storage tanks. past work has dealt with fuel degradation causing the tanks to fail but that work has met with failure. the mechanism that causes these tanks to fail is an extraction process whereby the protective ingredients in the polymer coating are removed by the fuel causing the elastomer to degrade by hydrolysis. collapsible tanks, polyurethanes, urethanes, ester, hydrolysis.
