cotton spinning has today reached a high technological standard not only in production, but also in product handling, e.g. in doffing, transportation, identification, weighing and packing progress is thus being made towards the 'no-man factory'. the missing link in the automation chain has up to now been the visual inspection of yarn packages. this inspection is still necessary despite the high sophistication of modern winders. at least one manual operation has to remain to perform this visual inspection. present-day technology with computer controlled visual inspection (computer vision) now permits this gap to be filled. following the research and development stage, this technology has now been adopted in industry, in fact to a greater extent in other countries than in italy. this article will describe the first system installed in a modern italian cotton spinning plant
