the shirley analyzer is the instrument usually used to determine the nonlint content of cotton stock and processing waste samples. in the reported study, an improved accuracy in shirley analyzer results was obtained by modifying the standard analysis procedure, including a reconditioning period before final weighing of specimen fractions, identifying possible sources of variations in results, and identifying possible sources of error. the experimental analysis procedure provides almost complete separation of free lint from trash. invisible loss can be materially reduced by reconditioning lint and waste fractions. variations in stock analysis results are associated with the amount of processing the stock received before analysis. 3 refs
