Researchers investigating the effects of raw materials and processing on yarn neppiness used the Advanced Fiber Information System's Fibre Contamination Tester (FCT) module to determine the number and size of neps in cotton from 27 different regions, changes in the number of neps and nep size distribution during spinning, and the influence of nep content in raw cotton and intermediate products on yarn nep content. Results indicated that the character of nep size distribution was similar for all raw cotton samples and was thus independent of origin or ginning method. The number of neps per gram in intermediate products increased during the preparation process up to scutching and decreased during carding and combing. Preparation processes increased mean nep size slightly, whereas carding and combing reduced mean nep size. The number of neps in the raw cotton was the primary factor influencing yarn nep content. 6 refs.
