Researchers investigated the measurement of interfiber friction of cotton fibers and evaluated the correlation between fiber friction and yarn quality. A series of tests determined the fiber friction parameters, fiber properties, and yarn quality parameters of 47 upland cottons and their corresponding rotor and ring spun yarns. Statistical analysis showed an optimal level of friction between fibrous assembly at which good spinning performance and yarn quality are acheived. Reducing the friction force between fibrous assemblies would facilitate processing and produce relatively uniform and strong yarns. To achieve uniformity, the fiber cohesion force was more important for rotor spun yarns than for ring spun yarns. Increasing the fiber cohesion force and the friction force would decrease yarn elongation. 7 refs.
