Researchers compared the manufacturing costs, quality, and economic effects of sizing or twisting warp yarns. Results demonstrated that plied yarns cost approximately two times more than singles yarns. Beaming the warp contributed to extra costs. The final cost for twisting ranged from DM 3.6-9.4 per kilogram. Total sizing cost, including size cooking, enzymatic and oxidative desizing, scouring during pretreatment, and effluent treatment, was DM 1.0-2.2 per kilogram. For sizing to be both economically and environmentally advantageous, the development of environmentally safe media, methods that consume less size, and more efficient effluent treatments or recycling systems are necessary.
