The ability of three sizing methods to reduce yarn hairiness was studied. Conventional sizing, sizing with separate end drying, and sizing with reduced end density using two sow-boxes were compared. The effect of sizing adhesives on yarn hairiness was also considered. A Zweigle Model G 565 hairiness meter was used to obtain quantitative measurements of yarn hairiness. Yarns sized conventionally had a hairiness index of around 1,050. Sizing with separate end drying produced yarns with a hairiness index of less than 1,000. The incorporation of gum with starch had an adverse effect on the laying down of the surface fibers. 8 refs.
