A mass of 32 kilograms of top (20.9 microns, 61 millimeter Hauteur) was recombed and processed through to a 5.5-ktex sliver. The wool was split into three lots and processed on each of the three systems. Yarn evenness was measured with the Yarn Fault Analyzer. The reversed Sirospun yarn had a similar evenness to that of the PLYfil yarn, whereas the doubly reversed Sirospun yarn had a similar evenness to the original Sirospun yarn. A Statimat II was used to measure the strength of the yarns. The tenacity and extension did not vary significantly with draft pairing. There was a characteristic increase in strength as twist level rose from 73 to 96 to 122. Some PLYfil yarns were two-folded with Z, not S, twist, but this had no marked effect on tenacity and extension at break. Sirospun yarn had a leaner structure with unidirectional twist. The PLYfil yarn was intermediate in character. 10 refs.
