An examination of real time measurement, data acquisition, and data analysis required to determine a reasonably simple approximate packing fraction function for yarn spinning presents examples of measured fiber-yarn linear density and diameter data required for theoretical analysis and correlation studies for specific yarn types. Other measurement include tension, color, twist, thin and thick places, nep counts, hairiness, and trash content. Optical sensors evaluated yarn linear density and yarn diameter data continuously during the spinning of 100 percent United States Upland cotton of Ne 20/1 with 3.4 twist multiple, Ne 30/1 with 3.4 twist multiple, and Ne36/1 with 4.0 twist multiple. Test parameters included 500,000 data values tested, a sample rate of 3.333 kilohertz, a yarn feed rate of 100 meters per minute, a sample interval of 0.5 millimeter, and a yarn test length of 250 meters.
