Researchers studied yarn tension parameters and forces on flatbed weft knitting machines used to process cotton. The study used yarns with varying structures to knit fabric samples and measured yarn tension forces at the top of the balloon and in the compensational zone. Samples of right-left knit fabric with three different wefting depths for each yarn had a 21 day relaxation period before analysis. Oscillation of yarn tension at loop formation on flatbed weft knitting machines depended on wefting depth and the structure of the yarn. Increased wefting depth resulted in larger oscillations of yarn tension forces. Maximum oscillations of yarn tension within one period always occurred at maximum wefting depths. Maximum yarn tension force values always appeared in the feeding and wefting phases. The formation time of one loop row depended on the wefting depth. 4 refs.
