Researchers examined the dynamic process of yarn hairiness formation in worsted ring spinning. A special CCD camera observed fiber behavior in the spinning triangle. A series of photographs demonstrated the formation mechanisms of leading, trailing, looped, and wild hairs. Most of the results agreed with prior research on the mechanisms involved in yarn hairiness formation; however, some unique features did occur. For Z-twist yarn, edge fiber on the left hand side of the spinning triangle formed the majority of trailing hairs. Pretwist on the right hand side assisted in fiber control. Short fibers also formed trailing hairs because they had difficulty in competing for yarn core positions due to a lack of tension buildup along their length. Edge fibers formed leading hairs easily if they were not intermingled with core fibers. Other fibers emerging from the front roll nip formed leading ends above the plane of the spinning triangle. 14 refs.
