Indian cotton yarn exporters need to consider such quality factors as breaking elongation. Many importing countries specify a breaking elongation between 5-5.5 percent, whereas the value for most Indian cotton yarn is between 4-4.45 percent. Experiments using several varieties of cotton evaluated factors that affect breaking elongation. Such fiber properties as staple length, micronaire, uniformity, maturity, and elongation affected yarn breaking elongation. Process factors, such as spindle speed, traveler number, and winding tension, also affected yarn breaking elongation. Decreased yarn neps resulted in higher breaking elongation values. Yarn doubling improved breaking elongation from 4.7 to 5.3 percent. 3 refs.
