Researchers using a new staple fiber migration modeling technique based on the Markov process analyzed such yarn structure features as irregularities in fiber disposition, evenness, and hairiness. The new technique defined the path of individual fibers in yarn cross sections within a three dimensional space. Tests showed that fiber migration can be characterized as a Poisson's flow of events and such properties as mean fiber position, root mean square deviation, and mean migration intensity can be expressed in a transition matrix. Results revealed that the technique accurately describes a wide range of yarn structures. However, further research into the memory retention of fibers migrating between zones is necessary to improve model functionality. 37 refs.
