A technique based on the analysis of CCD images taken during the capillary rise of colored liquid in yarns studied the capillary flow in polyester and nylon yarns and glass fibers. Experiments determined that the transition from dry yarn to wet yarn was not abrupt and analyzed the causes of this gradual rising liquid front. The kinetics of capillary rise followed the Lucas-Washburn equation, but great dispersion of experimental data through the yarn length resulted from heterogeneity of the interfilament space. 25 refs.
