From 1996-1998, Unifi invested $300 million in new texturing and partially oriented yarn (POY) spinning machinery for its North Carolina facility. Approximately $10 million was spent on a pilot spinning plant to facilitate research and development. The North Carolina plant manufactures 3.5 million pounds of POY per week. Its research facility is evaluating a technology for manufacturing colored POY. The texturing facility uses 72 Barmag FK texturing machines, each of which textures 80,000 pounds of polyester per week. Unifi products include its Super Bright nylon or polyester yarns that combine the properties of flat and textured yarns, ComFortrel Plus polyester yarn, a new moisture management yarn for socks and athletic apparel, and a soon to be introduced polyester yarn for seamless knit fabrics.
