Edmund Erdmann GmbH and Company and RWTH Aachen developed air jet texturing and covering processes that enable the first commercial manufacture of air jet textured blend yarns containing elastane fibers. The resultant air jet textured and covered (ATC) yarns are covered irregularly within entangled areas where the individual yarn components are mechanically combined. Varying the processing conditions results in ATC yarns with a wide variety of properties. The contractibility of the ATC yarns and fabric construction determine the potential contraction of the fabrics. Yarn structure is described relative to either the points of mechanical integration or the arrangement of the individual yarn components between the areas of entanglement.
