Fiber fly during knitting can result in unwanted colors in knit fabrics, needle damage, faulty needle selection, and clogged needles and sinkers. Researchers studied fiber fly during knitting, spinning, and two-for-one twisting and determined which fiber and yarn properties were indicators of increased fiber fly. Yarns with a high natural fiber content generated above average fiber fly. High twisting speeds, stress during dyeing, and inadequate waxing also caused fiber fly. Electrophoretic fractionation showed that fiber damage also occurred during the chlorination of wool.
