Researchers dissolved silk fibroin from Bombyx mori silkworms and cellulose in cuprammonium solution and spun the blend into yarns. The fibroin/cellulosic blend yarn had a tenacity of 1.61 grams per denier and a static modulus of 2.24 gigapascals. These values were much lower than those of fibroin, higher than those of cellulosic fiber, but similar to those of regenerated cellulose fiber. The fibroin/cellulosic yarn had higher tenacity and dynamic modulus properties than those of acetate. The blend yarn appeared to have the mechanical properties necessary for use in apparel. 10 refs.
