Researchers investigated the effects of winding, doubling, and twisting on the physical properties of yarn. Experiments evaluated yarn with a high twist, yarn with a moderate twist, and polyester/viscose blend yarn. An Uster Tester 3 testing machine measured yarn hairiness. Scanning electron microscopy characterized the actual appearance of the yarns. Yarn hairiness decreased as twist increased. A weak correlation between yarn count and hairiness existed. Winding, doubling, and plying increased hairiness. The hairiness of high twist single yarns, however, was lower than that of yarns with lower twist. Winding also increased the number of thick places. Doubling and twisting improved yarn strength, elongation, and evenness. 7 refs.
