The United States market for the Murata Vortex Spinner (MVS), introduced at OTEMAS 1997, is strong. Several companies have full production plants with MVSs or a sample machine, whereas other companies are considering their purchase. Experiments at Murata and the Institute of Textile Technology generated the first yarn quality indexes for MVS yarns. The samples were 24 lots of cotton MVS carded and combed yarns. Yarn count ranged from 12/1 to 50/1. MVS yarns compared with ring spun and open end spun yarns similar to the way in which MJS yarns compare with ring spun and open end spun yarns. Parameters included single end strength, elongation, and tenacity; Uster percent coefficient of variation (1, 3, and 10 yards); thick places and thin places; and neps.
