The Pilling Effect of Flat Knitwear -- The Importance of Yarn Content and Wear Density.

Researchers used 13 yarns of different wool/polyester and wool/acrylic blends to test the pilling tendency of knit fabrics. Yarns with the greatest density of polyester showed the lowest pilling tendency. A small decrease in density increased pilling. Further density decreases, however, did not result in further increases in pilling tendency. One hundred percent polyester yarn possessed the least pilling tendency at the lowest density setting. Wool/acrylic yarn pilling tendency correlated well with yarn density, but was less dependent on yarn composition. 6 refs.
