Researchers studied the tensile failure process of air spliced carded cotton, combed cotton, polyester/cotton blend, cotton/acrylic blend, and acrylic hosiery yarns. Approximately 80 percent of yarn breaks occurred in the splicing zone. The stick slip rupture occurred in the splicing zone for cotton, acrylic, and polyester/cotton blend yarns. The cotton/acrylic blend yarn did not show a slip stick rupture in the splicing zone, but showed a long creep or deformable region with higher spliced retained strength. Longer yarn test samples showed higher spliced retained strength than shorter yarn test samples when the splicing position was in the middle of the test sample during tensile testing. 12 refs.
