Researchers evaluated DREF-3 friction spun yarns with fibrous sheaths of viscose rayon fibers wrapped around three different polyester cores in varying core to sheath ratios. Increasing the proportion of core fibers up to 70 percent increased yarn tenacity, breaking extension, and abrasion resistance. Increasing the percentage of sheath fibers increased sheath slip resistance. Yarns with Z twist fibrous cores were the strongest yarns. Yarns with multifilament cores showed the highest breaking extension and abrasion resistance. Core content and type showed no relationship with yarn unevenness. 47 refs.
