An overview of woven and nonwoven fabric manufacture addresses potential developments in sizing processes, multished looms, loom automation, weft insertion, shedding mechanisms, raw materials selection, needle punching, spunbonding, and stitchbonding. New developments will focus on improving bobbin unwinding in the creel, cold sizing, after-waxing, optimization of slashing size in warp preparation, quick style changes, automatic setting of warp stop motion, high weft insertion speeds, harness-free jacquard looms, three dimensional woven fabrics, the use of finer fibers and flame resistant fibers for nonwoven fabrics, aerodynamic web formation, water jet bonding, and thermal bonding via calendering machines. 13 refs.
