An experiment investigating the hypothesis that the presence of seed coat fragments predisposes cotton yarn to additional weak areas analyzed the fiber properties, yarn properties, and Trashcam data generated by 105 spinning tests of 20 tex yarns. The weak areas appearing when seed coat fragments were present were more problematic because only a few were present in a yarn in which a very regular structure was expected. Two cotton groups could be differentiated for ring spun 20 tex yarn. Increasing the quality of the fibers increased the negative effects of seed coat fragments on yarn structure. 19 refs.
