Researchers determined the nature of the hairiness of a 100 percent cotton Rieter Com4 spun yarn and a 65/35 polyester/cotton blend Murata roll jet spun yarn and evaluated the effects of testing speed on yarn hairiness. A projection microscope connected to a CCD camera and Video Pro32 color image analysis system measured yarn hair length. A Zweigle G565 hairiness meter determined yarn hairiness at speeds of 50 meters per minute and 100 meters per minute. Loops were the predominant hairiness feature for both yarns. Both yarns showed hair length curves different from those of conventional ring and rotor spun yarns. Yarn hairiness increased with test speed for both yarns.
