Researchers analyzed the tensile failure process of air spliced yarns manufactured from carded cotton, combed cotton, polyester/cotton, cotton/acrylic, and acrylic hosiery yarns by repeated cutting and splicing. The stick slip rupture of cotton, acrylic, and polyester/cotton blend yarns occurred in the spliced zone rather than the normal zone. The splicing zone of cotton/acrylic blend yarn exhibited a long creep or plastically deformable region rather than a pronounced stick slip rupture. Analysis of the effect of yarn test length on spliced retained strength determined that longer test lengths resulted in higher spliced retained strength when the splicing position was kept in the middle of the length during testing. 12 refs.
