Researchers determined the effects of extension rate and cyclic loading on the physical properties of rayon yarns. A Saurer 60 B loom manufactured plain lining fabrics from rayon warp and filling yarns. A Statimat tensile testing machine under an extension rate of up to 9,999 millimeters per minute determined tenacity, elongation, work to rupture, and modulus. A laser based noncontact analog displacement sensor measured fabric creep during loom stoppages. Instantaneous extension rate depended on loom component configuration, tension, shed geometry and timing, and pick slippage. Tenacity, elongation, work to rupture, and modulus increased as stretching speed increased. The average extension rate during shedding was 2,000 millimeters per minute, approximately 22 times slower than the instantaneous extension rate. 11 refs.
